Rachel Evans hung up the phone. She didn't move. Her hand stand on the receiver. She looked straight ahead. "What was this?" she thought "what is going on? Oh, my God Ethan !"

She stood up and dialed a number. " Oh, Mary thank God your at home. I'm sorry I hope it's not too late. I had to talk to someone. And really it has to be you."

Rachel had called Mary Gold another teacher at Ethans' school. She might have a better idea of what was going on. There was also another reason Rachel called Mary Gold. Mary was the one person she knew that would really listen to her. Mary Gold was much older than Rachel, but Rachel never thought about that. Mary Gold had been her life preserver before and never before had she felt that she needed that saving out reach than right now.

Rachel held the phone, pacing back and forth as long as the cord would let her.

"I don't know how to say it any other way, but it is horrible. It's Ethan" Rachel began to cry. She sobbed. "Sorry, I'm sorry. It's hard, I'll explain, just give me a second."

After a few seconds Rachel continued in a very slow, stiff voice. "Mary, Ethan came home from school today very changed. At first I thought he was ill. I asked him what was wrong, if his stomach hurt? He didn't answer"

Rachel was about to cry but caught herself. "Finally Ethan said his teacher Miss Manners had told him he was a bad boy and everything was his fault. I didn't understand and asked him what he meant." Rachel took a deep sigh. "He said that his teacher said that it was his fault that his Mommy and Daddy didn't live together. That he was the reason that his Daddy was the way he was. He said his teacher screamed at him."

Rachel listened to the woman on the other end. "No, I know. There's something wrong. So I called Jannet Evans a few minutes ago. She doesn't know anything about it and she said she's really worried about Ethan. That we should talk with a counselor."

Rachel listened again to the another woman. "So you don't know anything about her? Yes I know she's new. But I don't see how she could know anything about Steven and me, and it doesn't make any sense why she would scream at Ethan. I'm so worried about Ethan. She said she had been planning to call me; that she was worried about Ethan. I have an appointment with her and a counselor Thursday."

Rachel let out a gasp. "Mary, I forgot. I have to make another call. Can I come see you tomorrow after work? Oh, God I'm glad you were at home." Rachel's shoulders fell. The next call would be hard. It would be like handing back a winning lottery ticket, saying 'No, thanks. I prefer to be miserable.'
